Walking into a novel
June 2- Santillana del Mar
Today we walked a short day into a medieval town. It was much like walking into a scene in a novel, even more so as we were weary travelers stopping at the local tavern. There is a beautiful church here and an old cloister as well. The church is named for a martyred woman, St. Julliana. It is full of tombs, relics, beautiful carvings, and artwork. I couldn't help but think of how many knees have kneeled on those rails. Of how many prayers those walls have heard. Strange to think this place has been here so long. Gill and I ate some good food and had some coffee and tea. We walked around and bought a few things. Including some much needed sweaters. It was a wonderful evening and we felt rested and energized. It was as though the history of the place seeped in and warmed our bones. Perhaps many a weary traveler has felt the same way.
